Malaysia's National Pickleball League Opens With a KL vs Shah Alam Showdown

Andrew Lee

The National Pickleball League (NPL) of Malaysia staged its inaugural Intercity Trophy Challenge, and Team Kuala Lumpur won it. They beat Team Shah Alam 15-7 over two days to take the ceremonial trophy, with the second day played at Stadium KWC in Kuala Lumpur on 4 Oct.

Stadium Pickleball's account says the NPL officially launched that Sunday, attended and officiated by representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the Malaysian Pickleball Association. The NPL Malaysia and KBS logos sat side by side on the big screen at the venue.

Two legs, 22 matches

The fixture ran as a home-and-away pair. Day 1 was the away leg at PickleX in Shah Alam on Saturday 3 Oct, and Day 2 was the home leg at Stadium KWC on Sunday 4 Oct, both from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with free admission. Stadium Pickleball billed the sides as the KL Eagles and the Shah Alam Wolves.

The post counts 22 category matches in all, and says most of them went to three sets, many decided on serve-to-win points. No cash prize was attached. The players it names include Mohd (Ash) Asyraf, Melvin Cheong and Syabil Shaharudin.

How the league describes itself

According to the same post, the NPL runs on a model built with pickleball venue owners, who contribute facilities and operational support instead of the league relying only on corporate sponsorship. It also puts amateur and professional players in one league environment, which the post says is meant to build mentorship and grassroots growth.

PickleAsia reports that Season One will have 21 teams in the Klang Valley, each representing a local constituency in Selangor and the Federal Territories. It also reports a Season One target of more than RM250,000 in prize funding, and a plan to extend to other Peninsular Malaysia hub cities in Season Two and nationwide, including Sabah and Sarawak, in Season Three.

Launch day, season still ahead

The sources word the same two days differently. Stadium Pickleball calls 4 Oct the official launch. PickleAsia describes the 3-4 Oct matches as a two-leg pilot played before the formal league kickoff. A separate Team KL recruitment post says players will compete for cash prizes once the official NPL Season launches in January 2027.

The next fixtures

Pre-season action resumes on 24 and 25 Oct, when Team Kuala Lumpur plays the Cheras district team in a two-leg home-and-away series at AlphaGenz Cheras and Stadium KWC. Team KL is also recruiting for its Open divisions: male and female players with a DUPR rating of 4.00 or higher can send their DUPR ID by direct message to @stadiumpickleballkwc.
